The Neighborhood

The Press Block stands on the corner of Barrington, George and Granville, across from the grandeur of City Hall and Grand Parade Square, facing Citadel Hill westward and the Halifax Waterfront on the east coast. There is simply no better location for living downtown.

Conservationists attribute the heritage value of the Barrington Street Historic Conservation District to the historic and architectural significance of its buildings, including The Press Block, and civic open spaces. Although the streetscape has changed dramatically over time, Barrington has remained steadfast as the predominant commercial street in Atlantic Canada for over 250 years.

Not to be outdone by its storied past, new editions await your excitement, with world-class cuisine, creative boutiques, international events and festivals, premiere destinations for the arts and cultural landmarks, all at your fingertips. The capital’s most popular theatres, galleries, cafés and venues are all within walking distance from your front door, making it easy to experience the best entertainment the city has to offer. Your neighbourhood is vibrant, eclectic and undeniably in the heart of Halifax.

The Building

The Press Block is nine stories at its tallest height with six high-end townhouses and 133 distinguished suites, along with commercial spaces on the Barrington street level. The design approach was conceived by acclaimed architects, interpreters, planners and urban developers who are deeply rooted in the community. Their vision is for the conservation of heritage elements to be both compatible and discernable from the new, contemporary pieces. Harmony triumphs as an unparalleled visual narrative in the state of an architectural masterpiece.

The view from Barrington south showcases its metropolitan side, with an 11’ tall window wall framing the lobby, accented with soft lighting and clean, recessed lines. Maintaining much of the existing stone and masonry, stylised cast iron and copper cladding, windows and sills for the remaining portions defines the building’s character. Given the dynamic nature of the site, archival photographs were used to reference source materials and ensure the fabric of its heritage is retained. These intentions set a precedent in Halifax for preserving coveted features, which are unique to the city’s distinct architecture.

The Press Block celebrates its history while adding richness and vibrance to the downtown core. Relayed best by the architects themselves: “As a whole, the design reflects the past, present and future of this significant urban site.”
